On Saturday the 28th February 1959 as a result of a decision by the British Transport Commission a large part of the former Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway was closed. Many people mourned the passing of their railway affectionately known as the “Muddle and Go Nowhere”
February 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the line’s closure. So it would seem appropriate that a celebration should take place to pay tribute to all those who worked on or were associated with the former M&GN since its conception in 1893. An enthusiastic team of North Norfolk Railway employees and volunteers were determined that this important milestone should not go unnoticed, and worked tirelessly to bring about the biggest Gala event
in the railway’s history.
This DVD features highlights from the 50th anniversary “That’s Yer Lot” Gala capturing some of the atmosphere and action
from the five-day spectacular. Adding to the ambiance is the frequent appearance throughout the film of the two 1950s ex - Eastern Counties Single
Decker buses, LL5G and MW5G. Also included is the brief visit of 44422 to the former hub of the M&GN at Melton Constable, along with a glimpse inside
Weybourne shed as preparations are made for the big event.
Visiting locomotives featured are: LNER B1 1306 Mayflower; BR 4MT 76079, L&Y A Class 1300; LMS 4F 44422; and 2MT 78019.
And from the home fleet: LNER J15 65462, N7 69621 and WD Austerity 2-10-0 90775. All locos can be seen hauling various stock formations,
including goods in the form of a demolition train. The lines Gresley Quad-Arts and B1 Mayflower were a resplendent match.
The glorious sight of LNER green and Gresley teak will be seen again soon at the North Norfolk when B12 8572 re-enters service later this year!
